All in all, the CrossFit Open has been rather stable – compared with the Regionals and Games. Below is a brief summary of the format, followed by a more thorough review.

The Open 2011 lasted 6 weeks, tested 15 movements and consisted of six AMRAPs (three couplets and triplets respectively) in the range of 5-20 minutes. It was the first and only time Push-ups were tested.
In 2012, the Open changed to its current 5-week format. 10 movements were tested over the course of five AMRAPs (two singlets – marking the first singlet programmed at the Open – one couplet and two triplets) in the range of 7-18 minutes. 2012 is the only Open that did not test the deadlift and some kind of clean. 2012 saw the first repeat of a previous Open workout, when 12.5 was 11.6. Interestingly, the increasing rep scheme of 11.6/12.5 would become a format often used again in some shape or form every Open since.
In 2013, we saw 12 movements tested, combined in three couplets and two triplets. Besides the four AMRAPs in the range of 7-17 minutes, for the first time a work window was introduced with 13.5 – which technically meant the workout did not have a time cap, but instead ended when the athlete could no longer perform a set amount of reps within a 4-minute window. For the vast majority of Open-athletes, however, it was in a 4 or 8-minute AMRAP. 13.3 was 12.4. 2013 was the last year to test box jumps, which had otherwise been a staple of the Open (this is allegedly, due to judging standards. Box jump-overs have generally been on the rise ever since).
2014 was in many ways similar to 2013, but still involved the introduction of multiple novelties. 13 movements were tested, with the notable introduction of the calorie row in 14.4. Bar-facing burpees made a return and appear to have replaced target burpees in official CrossFit competitions. An even bigger change was possibly made on the workout format front, with the addition of both the ‘For Time’ format and a decreasing rep scheme in 14.5, and the chipper format in 14.4. 2014 contained three AMRAPs in the range of 8-14 minutes. 14.5 was a sub-20 workout for the vast majority of Open athletes and another iteration of the work window format without a cap, but was for the vast majority a 3-6 minute AMRAP. 2014 is the only year besides 2011 that did not see an Open workout repeat.
Once again, 13 movements were tested in 2015. It marked the introduction of the Handstand Push Up to the Open and also the only year without burpees. The five workouts consisted of three couplets and two triplets, performed as three AMRAPs (8-14 minutes), one For Time which for the 75th percentile of both men and women was finished at around 10 minutes and one work window workout without a cap. 15.2 was a repeat of 14.2 and therefore again a 3-6 minute AMRAP in practice.
2016 marked a significant change in the time domains tested in the Open, something I will cover in more detail later. It again tested 13 movements and added two novel movements with the bar muscle up and the overhead walking lunge. The burpee also had its revenge in 2016, as bar-facing burpees were tested twice in 2016, it is the only movement to be tested twice in one year. 2016 consisted of four AMRAPs (range 7-20) and one For Time, in the shape of three couplets, one triplet and one chipper. 16.5 was 14.5.
In 2017, 14 movements were tested and of those 14, five were brand new in open. But as I will argue for later, one could also consider 2017 as the first year since 2014 that did not see the introduction of a novel type of movement. 2017 was however, inarguably, the first Open to see the AMRAP format outnumbered. Although 17.3 was in practice a work window AMRAP in the 8-12 minute range for almost the entire population of Open athletes, for the best in the world it was a work window For Time with a time cap of 24 minutes. Meanwhile, both 17.1 and 17.5 was For Time (in the 13-20 time domain for most of the population) and only 17.2 and 17.4 were AMRAPs (range 12-13). Like 2016, 2017 consisted of three couplets, one triplet and one chipper. However, the triplet – 17.2 – marked the introduction of the alternating reps format to the Open, wherein round 1-2, 5-6 T2B were performed, whilst in round 3-4, 7-8 et cetera Bar Muscle Ups were performed. 17.4 likewise marked the introduction of a new format, by combining the increasing and decreasing rep formats – so the rep scheme of the Squat snatches went down, whilst the rep scheme of the C2B went up.
